The Lawful Marsh , Part Two

And the longer we are in the swamp, the more our angle starts to pong. This is particularly true when we decide to press the issue from an exactly legal viewpoint.
Even if we win the case, we do not walk away humble and thankful.
Why? As we “got what we had coming to us. It occurred to me ( thanks to a judicious message I once heard from my mate Ray Stedman ) that when folk receive what they merit, they’re stole of the excitement of gratitude.
rather than being politely grateful, they’re either resentful that they did not get more ( or they did not get it earlier ) or they’re conceited because they were given their way. From start to end the process is a grim, sour, analytical battle of wills. And even if it ends—the offense is still there. Momentary mirth may happen as the “spoils of victory” are divided, but while the head swells, the heart toughens.
Did you know what process God prefers? Have you considered recently what he is saying about the correct way to solve our disputes? Do you need to understand His plan for healing offenses? Permit me:. Does any one of you, when he has got a case against his neighbour, dare to go to law before the unrighteous and not before the saints? So if you have law courts working with matters of this life, do you designate them as judges who are of no account in the church? I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there’s not among you one sensible man who will be in a position to decide between his brethren, but bro goes to law with brother, and that before unbelievers? In fact then, it is a defeat for you, that you have court actions with each other. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded? To the contrary, you yourselves wrong and deceive. Rejoice with people who rejoice, and weep with people who weep. Be of the same mind toward each other ; don’t be haughty under consideration, but associate with the lowly. Respect what’s right in the look of all blokes. If feasible, as far as it relies on you, be at peace with all men. Let all resentment and rage and fury and commotion and slander be put away from you, together with all malice. Be kind to each other, merciful, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. What a radical approach, but what a better plan. Now it will not come naturally, nor is it able to be implemented with a stubborn will and a proud spirit. An eagerness to listen, to agree, to yield, to admit, to pardon, to submit, to release, to forget, then to go on. Actually , to permit the other person to have something she or he doesn’t merit.
But, you see, that is what brings about the enjoyment of gratitude.
When that occurs, modesty replaces pride. Rights are far less vital given a healed relationship.
The Lawful Marsh , Part One

With a frightful glare, it dares us to forget its rules or perhaps think about disobeying its rules.
It gives us recourse when we have been assaulted or abused.
It’s the final huge stick we will wave in the face of an adversary. Those are the overused words of our excessive generation. Folks are to be sued by their youngsters. Spouses are being sued by their partners, and it is not restricted to sceptics. Christians are now neck deep in the legal swamp. Christian faculty members are now filing suit against the administrations of Christian faculties. Parishioners who have beefs about the support they received from their ministers are looking towards the courts to voice their fury and to search out a money settlement. Yes, siblings and sisters in the family of the Lord God are really pressing charges and demanding their rights.
Occasionally to the exclusion of any try to reconcile head to head. You’d think one Corinthians 6:1-8 is either drafted in hieroglyphics or is now not considered part of the biblical text. Now, do not think I am gullible enough to believe we Christians have no need for law or that we never have reason to protest. Or that I am blinded to the indisputable fact that there are scam con artists—wolves in sheep’s clothing—who prey on and exploit flocks.
we have got to be discerning, alert, ever aware that human baseness must be held under control, and sometimes it’s got to be exposed.
But how we go about it, the spirit with which we handle our conflicts, the angles we exhibit while working thru the method of reconciliation are critical. That’s where our Christianity is commonly hung out to dry. And that’s where we have a chance to exhibit the astonishing grace of Christ. Is the enormous courtroom win worth it? Jesus said, “For what will it profit a person if he gains the entire world and forfeits his soul?” ( Matthew 16:26 ). Tomorrow we’ll have a look at God’s alternative choice to the legal swamp.
Some Small Things

Being casual on the outside but a fairly exhaustive and trained soul inside, I occasionally must be reminded that few folk will even spot the thing I am camping on. So? So sweating the tiny stuff can sometimes be a drag. Greatness and the awareness of detail, in my viewpoint, are welded together. A great piece of music is like that—carefully prepared orchestration carrying out an impressive tune with the entire sound of balance. The choral group that performs is also committed to the fine line. Not too much room for “don’t sweat the little stuff” philosophy.
A great piece of writing is similarly a masterwork of detail. Words are selected, shaped, infrequently chiseled in order to dovetail into the exact meaning or outline the writer requires. Study the choice of colors, the feel, the shading. Look at the lines on that ton of white marble to which Michelangelo once put his hands. Those liquid lines in David’s form do not simply happen to flow. It’s no surprise that you’re shocked to find the stonework cold to the touch.
Something that real is meant to have warm blood in it. Why? As the Italian genius worked dull hours over the tiny stuff. Something inside his head could accept nothing less. A solid biblical foundation for such the focus on quality isn’t difficult to find. Consider the wonderful fashion in which the church was designed and built. With its “windows with inventive frames,” intricate beams, winding stairways, gold-covered cherubim, and “stone prepared at the quarry” so that “neither hammer nor axe nor iron tool [would be] heard in the house even though it was being built” ( one Kings 6:4-8, 28 ). The name of Our Lord God was exalted as folks witnessed such detailed beauty. What is true for grand music, great writing, precious art, and quality construction is also correct of the way some still practice medication or law, do their architectural drawings, teach their scholars, type their letters, evangelise their sermons, play their instruments, cook meals, fix automobiles, coach groups, sell insurance, run a business, a home, a college, an eaterie, or a ministry. It isn’t for the money or for the glory or for the celebrity it may bring. It’s simply a matter of deep-seated private pride and commitment. It all reduces down to fine, rare, quality artfulness. Decide now to do something special in the subsequent 24 hours—something nobody may ever notice except you and your Creator—in which you can demonstrate fine quality workmanship.
While you are deciding what to do, read with appreciation the 1st chapter of Genesis—and think about workmanship.
Teenager Crisis

While I was away for two weeks of holiday many years back, I read a book by David Elkind describing the lurching number of kids who lack the adult steerage and support they have to make a healthy transition into adultness.
His choice of title was acceptable : All Grown Up and No Place to Go.
The book goes to the guts of the issue and addresses the breakdown of parental security and stability. Deluged in the tide of social change and soaked up in their own excursion, looking for self-fulfillment and private discovery mums and dads are usually so overwhelmed that they’ve just minimal energy to speculate in their teen’s struggles.
And when you add the incontrovertible fact that today’s fogeys are caught in the crossfire of social philosophies, moral standards, and contrary price systems, even committed and well-intentioned oldsters ( particularly people who wish to lead with fairness and toleration ) regularly lack the decisiveness youths need and expect. Failing to act, we force our youths to do so, before they’re prepared.
as we are disinclined to take a firm stand, we reject teens the advantage of our parental concern and we impel them into early adulthood.
As a pa who reared 4 kids thru their teen years, I was naturally interested by any trustworthy and judicious endorse to help in making this journey as smart yet pleasing as possible. While I may not applaud everything Elkind recommended, I did find his words provocative. While gnawing on and digesting them, I was struck with a fascinating analogy between today’s kids and teen Christians. By that I mean a follower who is somewhere between youth and maturity. It’s not possible to determine this individual by years—some Christians are in the teens 2 years after conversion, others are not there until they have been in Our Lord God’s family for twenty years or longer.
But it appears that all who press on to maturity must endure such a turbulent passage. It’s tough enough to deal with the changes and handle the peer pressure and make more right calls than wrong ones during those susceptible years. I’m almost certain that it’s the teenaged believer, attempting to reach a measure of religious equilibrium, who becomes the most disillusioned when one of their “spiritual parents” defects or lives hypocritically. And that explains His eloquent caution about hanging a millstone round the necks of adults who cause people who are growing to stumble. I mostly questioned why He spoke those words with such severity. Stumbling, disillusioned followers of the frail teenage years simply lose their way en path to maturity. Perhaps that is the reason why so many in the “family” find themselves all grown up with no place to go. Growing young Christians are watching you. How much stability, integrity, and decisiveness are you demonstrating?
Denying Unwanted Feelings, First Part

Despite the indisputable fact that he was born of godly oldsters, put aside from his birth to be a Nazirite, and raised to the enviable position of judge in Israel, he never conquered his bias toward lust.
Many things that illustrate his lustful bent might be noted from the record of his life in the book of Judges. The 1st recorded words from his mouth were : I saw a lady ( 14:2 ). He was interested in the other sex precisely on the supposition of outward appearance : Get her for me, for she looks good to me ( 14:3 ). He judged Israel for twenty years, then went right back to his old practice of chasing women—a harlot in Gaza, and eventually Delilah ( 15:20-16:4 ). He became so preoccupied with his lustful wishes, he did not even know the Lord had departed from him ( 16:20 ). The outcome of Samson’s unlawful affairs are familiar to each one of us. The robust man of Dan was taken captive and turned into a slave in the enemy’s camp, his eyes were gouged out of his head, and he was allocated to be the grinder in a Philistine jail. The swarthy pride of Israel, who once held the highest office in the land, was now the bald clown of Philistia, a pathetic hollow shell of humanity. His life, once crammed with guarantee and grace, was now a picture of hopeless, defenseless despair.
The scented memories of erotic pleasure in Timnah, Gaza, and the legendary valley of Sorek were now crushed by the putrescent stink of a Philistine dungeon. Without realizing it, Solomon wrote another epitaph—this one for Samson’s tombstone:. His very own iniquities will capture the wicked,. And he’ll be held with the cords of his sin. And in the greatness of his folly he’s going to go astray. The same words could well be chiseled in the marble over plenty of other crypts. I suspect, for instance, of the silver-throated orator of Rome, Mark Antony. In his early manhood, he was so consumed with lust that his mentor once roared in disgust:.
In a position to conquer the world but unable to withstand an enticement. I think of the man I met many years ago—a fine itinerant Bible teacher.
He claimed he’d been keeping a private list of men who were once excellent expositors of the Scripture, able and respected men of The Lord God. Who have castaway their religion on the shoals of moral defilement. In the previous week, he announced, he had entered the name ofnumber 42 in his book. This downcast, sordid statistic, he claims, made him be additional wary and discreet in his very own life. Maybe , by this point, he has added a pair dozen more.
A chill ran down my backbone when he told that story. Whether by savage attack or sophisticated recommendation, the minds of a good range of folks are vulnerable to its attack.
Its appealing voice can infiltrate the most intellectual mind and cause its victim to believe its lies and reply to its appeal. Bolt your front door and it will rattle at the window, crawl into the sitting room thru the Television screen, or wink at you out of a mag in the den. How does one handle such an assertive intruder? Try this : when lust advises a rendezvous, send Jesus Christ as your representative. Have Him inform your unneeded suitor that you would like zilch to do with unlawful wish. Have your Lord remind lust that since you and Christ have been united together, you are now not in thrall to sin. ( Read Romans six. ) his expiration and resurrection freed you from sin’s stranglehold and gave you a new Master. And that new Master isn’t frightened to slam the door in lust’s face, irrespective of how far it has slinked in.
After the Disaster, Second Part

Could it be that you are starting to feel the nick of falling rocks? Perhaps the landslide has fallen and you are more than a little desperate. Job is our model for staying faithful when life is reduced to rubble. He sincerely believed the Lord who gave had every right to take away ( Job 1:21 ). “Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” ( Job 2:10 ). He looked up, saying his Lord’s right to rule over his life. Who is the fool that claims God has no right to add sand to our clay or marks to our vessel or fire to His workmanship? Who dares lift his clay fist heavenward and question the Potter’s plan? Not Job. To him, God’s sovereignty was tainted with His love. Second, he counted on the guarantee of resurrection. He looked forward, relying on his Lord’s guarantee to make all things bright and attractive in the life beyond.
He knew that at that time, all agony, death, sorrow, tears, and adversity would be removed. Understanding that “hope doesn’t disappoint” ( Romans fifty five ), he endured today by envisioning tomorrow. 3rd , he admitted his very own shortage of understanding. Job failed to feel responsible to provide an explanation for the “whys” of his situation. And that no point of Yours can be frustrated.
So I have announced that which I didn’t understand,. Things too glorious [too deep] for me, which I didn’t know. I’m going to ask You, and You indoctrinate me.” ( Job 42:2-4 ). He looked inside, admitting his disability to put it all together. Resting his case with the righteous Judge, Job didn’t feel forced to offer answers to all the questions or unravel all of the burning riddles. For you, trouble may appear ten thousand miles away.
That is the way Job felt only a few minutes before the landslide.

After a Disaster, First Part

He could describe intense inner suffering in the 1st person due to his very own ocean of discomfort. Step into the time tunnel with me and let’s travel together back to Uz ( not like the magician of ___, but like the land of __ ). This place called Uz had a voter who had the status of everybody, as he was blameless, upright, God-fearing, and clean-living. He had ten youngsters, fields of stock, a sufficiency of land, a houseful of servants, and an important pile of money.
nobody would reject the man called Job was “the best of all of the men of the east” ( Job thirteen ). He had earned that title thru years of tough work and truthful dealings with others. Then, without statement, difficulty thundered on him like a landslide of great, jagged rocks. He lost his cattle, crops, land, servants, and—can you think it?—all ten kids. Shortly afterward he lost his healthiness his last human hope of getting by.
I plead with you to stop reading, shut your eyes for 1 minute, and identify with that good man—crushed underneath the weight of difficulty.
The book that bears his name records an entry he made into his book shortly afterwards the rocks stopped falling and the dust started to settle. With a trembling hand, the person from Uz wrote:. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Sanctified be the name of the LORD.” ( Job 1:21 ). Through all this Job didn’t sin nor did he blame God.
How could any one handle such a sequence of grief-laden ordeals so calmly? Think about the result : bankruptcy, discomfort, ten fresh graves. Yet we read that he worshiped God, he didn’t sin, nor did he blame his Maker.
Well, why failed to he? How could he ward off the antagonism or ignore thoughts of suicide? At risk of oversimplifying the situation, I recommend 3 basic answers : Job claimed God’s loving sovereignty ; he counted on the guarantee of resurrection ; and he confessed his very own lack of understanding. We’ll take a better look at every of these tomorrow.
God is with Us | Christianity in the News

We are in trouble circumstances are outside our control, and we see no relief for the future. He gives us what we needHis love and strength, a feeling of security, and the understanding that we aren’t alone. Our Lord understands what it is like to suffer, to be declined, or to lose a family member.
The God who walks with us isn’t restrained by anything, so we needn’t be terrified.
God has a purpose for permitting hard times.The story of Joseph obviously illustrates this truth. Joseph couldn’t see God’s purposeand neither will we almost all of the timebut he knew God’s personality and trusted Him thru his many trials. His religion was rewarded when he was able to save his folks.
God will never leave you nor forsake you ( Hebrews 13:5 ) and His good purposes will be carried out.
The Strength Of Grace

Honestly , I know of nothing which has the power to switch us from inside like the liberty that comes thru grace. It is so dazzling it’ll change not only our hearts but also our faces. And goodness knows, many of us are past due for a face change. Every one of us are drawn to those whose faces invite us in and urge us on. They came to a stream which had left its banks due to a downpour.
The distended stream had washed the bridge away. Each rider was compelled to ford the brook on horseback, fighting for his life against the quick currents.
The real likelihood of death threatened each rider, which caused a traveler who wasn’t part of their group to step aside and watch. After many had dropped in and made it to the opposite side, the stranger asked President Jefferson if he would ferry him across the stream. The person climbed on, and at once afterward the 2 of them made it safely to the opposite side. As the stranger declined off the back of the saddle onto dry ground, one in the group asked him, “Tell me, why did you choose the president to ask this favor of?” the person was startled, admitting he had no idea it was actually the president who had helped him. “All I know,” he claimed, “is that on some of your faces was written the answer ‘No,’ and on a few of them was the answer ‘Yes.’ His was a ‘Yes’ face.”. I haven’t seen Him, but I have determined from what I have read about Him this was true. Yet none of their poison seeped into His life. How could it be? What was it that kept Him from becoming caught in their grip? In one word, it was grace.
He was so full of truth and grace, He left no inner space for their legalistic poison.
Receiving the Gift

The crisis is they think it’s the way they deserve to be. They have not known the truth that would set them free.
They are victimised, existing as if living on death row rather than enjoying the beauty and clean air of the abounding life Christ modeled and made feasible for all of His supporters to make a claim. Sadly , most don’t have any idea as to what they are missing. That is what is being attacked so ceaselessly, so violently. Those that are not cushty rejecting it have made a decision to debate it. Like the times of the Protestant Reformation, grace has again become a theological soccer kicked from one end of the field to the other as clergymen and bible thumpers, students and scholars disagree over terms like annoyed coaches on opposite sides making an attempt to gain benefit over each other. It’s a classic no-win debate that trivializes the issue and leaves the masses who watch the fight from the stands confused, polarized, or worst of all, bored. Grace was supposed to be received and lived out to the fullest, not dissected and researched by those that would rather disagree than eat.
It’s time for grace to be awakened and released, not denied. To be enjoyed and openly given, not discussed. To spend one’s time discussing how grace is received or how much commitment is mandatory for deliverance, without getting into what it suggests to live by grace and experience the superb liberty it provides, quickly leads to a counter-productive debate.
It becomes little more than another boring unimportant pursuit where the bulk of God’s folk spend days casting backwards and asking, “How did we get it?” instead of looking forward and saying, “Grace is ours.
My plea is that we claim it and permit it to set us free. When we do, grace will become what it was intended to be—really superb.
